LOVE — Agape

In English, we use the word love for almost everything.

We love our families.
We love our friends.
We love a good meal.
We love a song.
We love a beautiful day.

One word… used a hundred different ways.

But in the language the New Testament was written in, there were different words for love. Each one meant something specific.

And one of the most important was agape.

What Agape Love Is

Agape isn’t a feeling.

It isn’t romance.
It isn’t attraction.
It isn’t based on how someone treats you.

Agape is a love that chooses.

It gives.
It stays.
It forgives.
It sacrifices.
It keeps showing up.

Even when it’s hard.

This is the kind of love Scripture uses most often when it speaks about the love of God… and the love of Christ.

It starts in Genesis.

Before the word “agape” was ever written in Greek, the action of agape was already present.

You see it when:

      - God creates mankind in His image

      - He walks with Adam and Eve

      - He covers their shame after the fall

      - He stays with His people even when they turn away

That is agape.

Not because they deserved it.
Because He chose it.

Jesus — The Full Picture of Agape

Agape becomes clearest when we look at Jesus.

He loved:

      - The sick

      - The outcast

      - The sinners

      - The ones who doubted

      - The ones who misunderstood Him

And even the ones who would betray Him.

Agape love doesn’t wait for someone to be worthy.
It moves toward them anyway.

And at the cross, we see the fullest picture of it.

A love that gives everything.
A love that holds nothing back.

When Scripture tells us to love others, it isn’t talking about liking everyone.

It’s calling us into something deeper.

Agape love says:

I will be patient.
I will be kind.
I will forgive.
I will stay gentle.

Not because it’s easy…
but because this is how Christ loves me.

Agape is not just a word.

It is the heartbeat of the Gospel.

It began in the earliest pages of Scripture, was lived out through the life of Jesus, and still reaches for us today.

A love that chooses us.
A love that stays.
A love that never lets go.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me with a love that does not change,
a love that is patient, steady, and always present.

Thank You for the kind of love that reaches for me,
even when I fall short…
even when I wander…
even when I forget.

Teach me to understand Your agape love more deeply each day.
Help me to receive it, to rest in it, and to trust it.

And Lord, shape my heart to love like You do.

Help me to be patient when it is hard,
kind when it would be easier not to be,
gentle when I feel tired,
and forgiving when I feel hurt.

Let Your love be the love that flows through me —
in my words, in my actions, and in the quiet choices no one else sees.

Thank You for a love that gives,
a love that stays,
and a love that never lets go.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
