standing in the gap

I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land…”

— Ezekiel 22:30

There is a place few people see.

It is not a stage, nor a position anyone applauds.
It is the quiet space between what is broken and what is being restored.

Scripture speaks of it as a gap in the wall—
a place where something once strong has given way.
And God said He looked for someone to stand there.

Not to fix everything.
Not to carry what was never theirs to carry.
But simply to stand.

To pray when others cannot.
To hold hope when someone else has lost it.
To remain present in places others may walk away from.

This is not loud work.
It is not hurried work.

It is the kind of work that happens in quiet prayers,
in gentle words,
in moments where you choose to stay instead of stepping back.

Sometimes, standing in the gap feels like weight.
Other times, it feels like waiting.

But always—it is love.

It is choosing to stand between hurt and healing,
between what is and what could be,
and trusting God to do what only He can do.

Perhaps it feels new to you now—
this name for something your heart has already known.

But maybe it is not new at all.

Maybe you have been standing in the gap for longer than you realize.

And now, God is simply calling it forward—
not to burden you,
but to remind you:

You are not standing there alone.

✨ Reflection

- Where has God quietly placed me to “stand” for someone else?

- Am I trying to fix what only God can heal, or faithfully standing in prayer?

- What would it look like to remain present without striving?

Prayer:

Lord,

Teach me to stand where You place me—
not in my own strength, but in quiet trust.

Help me to carry what is mine to carry
and release what belongs to You.

Give me a heart that does not turn away from broken places,
but also does not become overwhelmed by them.

Let my prayers be steady,
my presence gentle,
and my spirit anchored in You.

Where there is hurt, let me bring compassion.
Where there is distance, let me bring peace.
Where there is waiting, let me trust Your timing.

And remind me, Lord—
I am never standing alone.

Amen.
