Lent Day 23 — Water from the Rock
Scripture
"Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink."
— Exodus 17:6
Devotion
The wilderness has a way of revealing our deepest needs.
The people of Israel had already seen God provide manna from heaven. Yet thirst came quickly in the dry places, and once again they wondered how they would survive. There were no rivers in sight—only stone and dust. Nothing about the landscape suggested that life could come from it.
But God often provides from places we would never expect.
At His command, Moses struck the rock, and water flowed out—enough for everyone. What looked like the most lifeless place became a source of life.
The apostle Paul later reflected on this moment and wrote that the people “drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.” Even in the wilderness, Christ was already present—quietly sustaining them long before they fully understood.
Sometimes our own journeys bring us to places that feel just as barren. We look around and see no clear solution, no visible provision, no way forward. Yet God is not limited by what we see. The same God who brought water from the rock is able to bring life into the hardest places of our lives.
What appears dry to us may already be held in His hands.
🌿 Reflection
Where in your life does everything feel dry or impossible right now?
God brought water from a rock in the wilderness.
Is there a place where Christ may already be sustaining you, even if you cannot yet see the source?
🌿 Prayer
Lord,
When I find myself in dry and difficult places, help me remember that You are never absent.
You are the God who brings water from the rock and life from places that seem empty.
Teach me to trust Your provision even when I cannot see it yet.
Refresh my heart, strengthen my faith, and remind me that Christ is always near, sustaining me day by day.
Amen.
