Lent Day 12 — Listening
Scripture
“My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.
Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart.”
— Proverbs 4:20–21
Devotion
We often come to God with words ready.
Requests formed.
Worries organized.
Answers hoped for.
But after surrendering…
after waiting…
after making room…
after learning to be still…
a quieter invitation remains:
Listen.
Scripture tells us that God was not in the wind, nor the earthquake, nor the fire — but in a gentle whisper.
God does not compete with noise.
He meets us in attentiveness.
Listening requires trust.
It asks us to believe that God is already speaking — even when we do not yet understand what we hear.
Sometimes His voice comes as peace instead of instruction.
Sometimes as a Scripture remembered at the right moment.
Sometimes as clarity that settles slowly, like morning light filling a room.
Listening is not straining to hear.
It is resting with expectation.
When we listen, prayer becomes conversation instead of monologue.
And we discover that God has been nearer than we realized all along.
Today, do not rush to speak.
Sit gently before Him.
And listen.
Reflection
Where in my life might God already be speaking softly?
What noise or hurry makes it difficult for me to hear?
Can I sit with God today without needing immediate answers?
🌿 Prayer
Lord,
Teach my heart to listen.
Quiet the voices that compete for my attention and slow my spirit enough to recognize Your presence.
Help me trust that You are speaking — through Your Word, through peace, through gentle guidance I may not yet fully understand.
Let me rest in Your nearness today.
Amen.
