Lent Day 5 — Open Hands

Learning to release what God is ready to carry.

Scripture

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
— 1 Peter 5:7

Devotion

Trust begins in the heart, but surrender happens in the hands.

Yesterday, you were invited to trust God — to believe He is faithful even when life feels uncertain. Today, Lent asks something quieter and deeper:

What are you still holding onto?

We often say we trust God while still gripping tightly to outcomes, worries, or plans. We carry them carefully, turning them over in our minds, trying to manage what only God can truly hold.

But trust naturally leads to release.

An open hand cannot cling — yet it is the only posture able to receive.

God does not ask us to surrender because He wants to take something away. He asks because He longs to carry what has been weighing down our hearts. The burdens we clutch so tightly were never meant to rest on our shoulders.

Surrender is not giving up.
It is giving over.

It is placing our fears, our timelines, our unanswered questions into hands far stronger and far gentler than our own.

Today, imagine opening your hands before God — not dramatically, not perfectly — just honestly.

Let Him hold what you cannot fix.
Let Him lead what you cannot control.
Let Him care for what you deeply love.

You are not losing anything by surrendering to God.
You are finally allowing yourself to rest.

Reflection

What am I still holding tightly that God is inviting me to release today?

🌿Prayer

Lord,
You see the things I carry and the worries I struggle to release.
Teach me to open my hands before You.
Help me surrender what I cannot control and trust Your care more than my own efforts.
Fill my heart with the peace that comes from resting in Your hands.
Amen.
